Album Review - Josh Groban - Noel

Posted by Robbie | Posted in Music, Reviews | Posted on 12-12-2008

I went on air just before the release of Josh Groban’s Noel and berated the label for releasing it too early. Dope! You’ve never let me forget that. ‘Noel’ went on to be the best selling album of 2007 in the USA. Not surprising, really. All the faves are there, plus the classic David Foster production and that extraordinary voice.

I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ contains messages from the troops, guaranteed to pull at even the most cynical of heart strings. Solo oboe lines, subtle piano, soaring strings. All in all, a wee gem.

The Christmas Song’ starts with a guitar accompaniment; Josh sings the verse before a lush orchestra sneaks in to lift the track. That’s a good word for the overall feel of this volume of work. Lush.
Pop onto Wikipedia to view the extraordinary sales record of this album and you begin to realize how popular it became; and how quickly too.

The duet with Brian McKnight on ‘Angels We Have Heard On High’ is one of the many highlights of an album full to the brim of highlights. Likewise the duet with Faith Hill on ‘The First Noel’. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir make an appearance on ‘Oh Come All You Faithful’, lending a richness of tone that only that body of singers can. Also giving a traditional feel to ‘Noel’ with a less than standard arrangement. I feel that word coming around again…Lush!

You just have to listen to ‘Noel’ once and you will be hooked.

Enjoy!
